Whisky brands by country and style

Where a whisky comes from shapes how it tastes and what it costs. That holds for all the whisky brands in Malaysia. So if you already know you like a style, start with the group below. Each group also links to our guide to that type of whisky.

Blended Scotch

Blends mix malt and grain whisky from many Scottish distilleries. They are smooth, easy to mix and usually the cheapest bottles on the shelf. In Malaysia the big names are Johnnie Walker, Chivas Regal, Ballantine's and Dewar's. For a lower budget, look at Grant's, Teacher's, Black & White, The Famous Grouse and VAT 69.

At the top end, Royal Salute starts at 21 years old. Meanwhile, Monkey Shoulder is a blended malt, which means it mixes only malt whiskies with no grain. Our blended Scotch guide explains the categories.

Scotch single malts by region

A single malt comes from one distillery, using malted barley and pot stills. The Scotch Whisky Association groups distilleries by region, and each region has a loose house style.

Single malts cost more than blends, but the range is wide. For a full comparison, see our single malt guide and the best single malts in Malaysia.

American whiskey

Bourbon must use at least 51% corn and new charred oak barrels, so it tastes sweet, with vanilla and caramel. In Malaysia you will find Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, Woodford Reserve and Bulleit. Jack Daniel's is a Tennessee whiskey, filtered through maple charcoal before ageing. Our bourbon guide and rye whiskey guide explain the rules.

Irish whiskey

Irish whiskey is usually smooth and light, which makes it popular with beginners. Jameson is by far the easiest to find here. Bushmills and Tullamore D.E.W. are also on many shelves. See our Irish whiskey guide for the styles.

Japanese whisky

Japanese whisky follows Scottish methods but often aims for a softer, cleaner taste. Two companies dominate. Suntory makes Yamazaki, Hakushu, Hibiki, The Chita and Toki and Kakubin. Its rival Nikka makes From the Barrel, Days and the Yoichi and Miyagikyo malts.

Since April 2021, the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association standard sets rules for the words "Japanese whisky". The whisky must be distilled, aged for at least three years and bottled in Japan. Our Japanese whisky guide covers it in more depth.

Taiwanese and Indian whisky

Hot climates age whisky fast, so these brands taste rich and mature for their age. Kavalan comes from Taiwan. Amrut and Paul John come from India. Our Taiwanese and Indian whisky guide compares them.

Canadian and Malaysian whisky

Crown Royal is a smooth Canadian blend, though it has limited availability here. Finally, Timah is a Malaysian blended whisky and one of the few local brands on retail shelves.

Typical price is the range at mainstream Malaysian retailers for a standard 70cl or 75cl bottle, checked in October 2026. *Lowest seen is the cheapest online discounter listing. It may be a different bottle size or parallel-import stock. Prices change often, so confirm with the retailer before you buy.

  • Glenfarclas is a Speyside single malt. Two specialists, whisky.my and Whiskery, list it.
  • Auchentoshan is a Lowland single malt. Only whisky.my listed it in our check.
  • Wild Turkey is a Kentucky bourbon, with five bottles on sale, from 81 to Rare Breed.
  • Redbreast and Teeling are Irish whiskeys. Teeling shows up at six shops, including the importer's own online store.
  • Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare are Kentucky bourbons. Only Whiskery listed them.

How we price whisky brands in Malaysia

Every guide to whisky brands in Malaysia uses the same method, so you can compare prices fairly. In October 2026 we checked online prices at Malaysian retailers. These included whisky.my, W Wine & Liquor Warehouse, Jaya Grocer, Whiskery, Kanpai, Nomu, Blue Ocean and Goodstuff. Where a shop showed both a "regular" and a "sale" price, we recorded the sale price, since that is what you pay.

Each table then shows two figures:

  • Typical price: the range at mainstream shops for a standard 70cl or 75cl bottle.
  • Lowest seen: the lowest listing at an online discounter. It may be a different size or parallel-import stock, so we keep it separate.

We do not include duty-free prices in the brand tables, because airport shops sell different sizes, often 1 litre. For those, see our duty-free whisky guide. For the overall picture, our whisky price Malaysia guide compares every brand at once.

How to choose a whisky brand

With so many whisky brands in Malaysia, start with a budget. Our price guides for whisky under RM100, under RM200 and under RM500 narrow the field quickly. Then think about taste. If you like smooth and sweet, try Speyside malts, bourbon or Irish whiskey. If you like smoke, go for Islay.

Also consider how you will drink it. Blends and Japanese whisky suit highballs, as our whisky cocktails guide shows. Older single malts, on the other hand, are best sipped neat. For a shortlist, see the best whisky in Malaysia or our whisky for beginners picks.

Wherever you buy, use an established retailer and check the excise tax stamp. Our where to buy whisky guide lists trusted shops. Above all, enjoy whisky slowly and responsibly. You must be 21 or older to buy alcohol in Malaysia.

Prices change with promotions, stock and exchange rates. Treat these ranges as a guide and confirm the current price with the retailer.
