Jack Daniel's comes from Lynchburg, a small town in Moore County, Tennessee. The brand says it has made whiskey there since 1866. Some historians, however, date the business to 1875, based on registration papers. Either way, it is one of the oldest names in American whiskey.
Brown-Forman, a drinks group from Louisville, Kentucky, has owned the distillery since 1956. Today the black-label Old No.7 sells around the world. The company also makes rye, bonded and single barrel bottles, but only four expressions turn up often in Malaysia.

Jack Daniel's spells it "whiskey", and it calls its product Tennessee whiskey rather than bourbon. The key difference is one extra step. Before the new spirit goes into the barrel, it drips slowly through about 10 feet (3 metres) of sugar maple charcoal. The brand calls this charcoal mellowing, and the wider trade calls it the Lincoln County Process.
