How to taste whisky as a beginner

Tasting whisky is simple. However, a few small steps make a big difference, especially with strong spirits.
- Pour a small measure. About 20–30ml is plenty for a first taste.
- Use a tulip glass. A narrow top holds the aroma. A wine glass works too.
- Smell gently. Keep your mouth slightly open, and do not push your nose deep into the glass.
- Take a small sip. Let it rest on your tongue for a moment, then swallow.
- Add a few drops of water. Water softens the alcohol and often brings out more fruit.
If it still feels too strong, add ice or make a highball. There is no wrong way to enjoy it. Our how to drink whisky guide goes deeper, and the Scotch Whisky Association's tasting toolkit helps you name what you taste.
Easy mixers for whisky beginners
Mixing is a great way in. For example, a highball needs only whisky, ice and soda water. Ginger ale suits Irish whiskey, while cola suits bourbon and Tennessee whiskey. Then, once you know which whisky you like, try a little of it neat. Our whisky cocktails guide has simple recipes.
Whisky gifts for beginners
If you are buying for a new whisky drinker, choose a well-known, smooth bottle. Johnnie Walker Black Label 12 (RM248–RM269) and Chivas Regal 12 (RM264–RM273) are safe choices. For a single malt, Glenfiddich 12 costs RM318–RM349. Also, Monkey Shoulder makes a fun, modern gift. For more ideas by budget, see our whisky under RM200 list.
Drink responsibly
You must be 21 or older to buy alcohol in Malaysia. Start slowly, drink water between drams, and never drink and drive. When you are ready for more, our best tasting whisky list and best single malt list are good next steps.
Frequently asked questions
What whisky should a beginner start with?
Start with something smooth and unpeated. Monkey Shoulder (RM253–RM310), Jameson Original (RM213–RM310) and Glenlivet Founder's Reserve (RM258–RM312) are all soft and easy. If you prefer sweet flavours, try Maker's Mark (RM244–RM319).
What is the smoothest whisky for beginners?
Irish whiskey such as Jameson or Bushmills Original is very smooth, partly because both are triple distilled. Light Speyside malts and blended malts such as Monkey Shoulder are also gentle. Avoid smoky Islay malts at first.
Should beginners drink whisky neat or with ice?
Either is fine. Try a small sip neat, then add a few drops of water to soften it. Ice numbs the flavour a little but makes whisky easier in hot weather. A highball with soda is the easiest way to start. Our how to drink whisky guide explains each method.
What is a good whisky gift in Malaysia?
For a safe, well-known gift, choose Johnnie Walker Black Label 12 (RM248–RM269) or Chivas Regal 12 (RM264–RM273). For a single malt, Glenfiddich 12 (RM318–RM349) is a classic. Japanese whisky such as Hibiki Japanese Harmony makes a premium gift.
Is cheap whisky good for beginners?
A budget blend is fine for mixing. However, very cheap bottles can taste harsh neat, which may put you off. Also, a price far below normal can mean a fake. Spend a little more for your first sipping bottle, and buy from trusted shops.
What is the legal age to buy whisky in Malaysia?
You must be 21 or older to buy alcohol in Malaysia, under the Food (Amendment) Regulations 2016. Shops may ask for ID.
Is single malt or blended whisky better for beginners?
Both work. Blends are usually cheaper and very smooth, so they make a good first step. A light single malt such as Glenlivet Founder's Reserve then shows you how one distillery's style tastes.
