Irish Whiskey: Styles, Rules and Prices in Malaysia

Smooth, fruity and often triple distilled. Here is what makes Irish whiskey different, what single pot still means and which bottles you can buy in Malaysia.

By Whisky Malaysia Editorial Team6 min read

Irish whiskey is whiskey distilled on the island of Ireland and aged there for at least three years in wooden casks. It is known for a smooth, light and fruity style, often thanks to triple distillation. Ireland also has its own unique style, single pot still whiskey. In Malaysia, Tullamore D.E.W. Original sells for RM185–RM235 and Jameson Original for RM213–RM310. This guide explains the rules, the four Irish styles, the main brands and current prices.

What is Irish whiskey?

Irish whiskey has a legal definition in the Irish Whiskey Act 1980. Under that Act, the spirit must be distilled in Ireland or Northern Ireland from a mash of cereals. The malt in the mash must turn the starch into sugar, with or without other natural enzymes. Then the spirit must age in wooden casks for at least three years, in Ireland, Northern Ireland or both.

So unlike Scotch, Irish rules cover the whole island. Bushmills, for example, sits in Northern Ireland, yet it makes Irish whiskey. Note too that Irish law asks for wooden casks, not only oak.

The spelling also differs. The Irish mostly write "whiskey" with an "e", while Scotland writes "whisky". For a side-by-side view of all the styles, see our types of whisky hub.

The four styles of Irish whiskey

Ireland's official product specification, used for its protected name, lists four styles. Each has its own taste.

Single pot still

This is the style only Ireland makes. The mash must hold at least 30% malted barley and at least 30% unmalted barley, with up to 5% other cereals. Distillers then run it through pot stills. The raw barley gives a creamy, oily feel and a spicy edge. Redbreast 12 is the classic example, at RM376–RM492 in Malaysia.

Malt

Irish malt whiskey uses only malted barley in pot stills, much like a Scotch single malt. However, it is often triple distilled and rarely peated. Bushmills 10 Year Old Single Malt sells for RM278–RM331.

Grain

Grain whiskey comes from column stills, using maize or wheat with some barley. It is light and sweet. Most of it goes into blends, though a few brands bottle it alone.

Blended

Blended Irish whiskey mixes two or more of the styles above. Most best-sellers are blends, including Jameson and Tullamore D.E.W.. They tend to be smooth, light and easy to mix.

Triple distillation: is all Irish whiskey triple distilled?

Many people think so, but it is not a rule. Triple distillation is an Irish tradition, and Jameson and Bushmills both use it. Each extra run through the still makes the spirit lighter and purer. As a result, triple-distilled whiskey often tastes softer than double-distilled Scotch.

However, the product rules allow other methods. Some newer Irish distilleries distil only twice. So check the label, or the brand's own notes, if this matters to you. A few Scotch distilleries, such as Auchentoshan, also distil three times, which shows the method is not purely Irish.

Which bottle to try first

Your first pick depends on budget and taste. Here is a simple path through the Malaysian range, from easy blends to richer pot still whiskey.

  1. Start light. Tullamore D.E.W. Original (RM185–RM235) or Jameson Original (RM213–RM310) are gentle, low-cost blends. They suit both sipping and mixing.
  2. Add depth. Next, try Jameson Black Barrel (RM269–RM320) or Bushmills Black Bush (RM265–RM299). Both carry more body, sweet spice and toasted oak.
  3. Taste a malt. Bushmills 10 Year Old Single Malt (RM278–RM331) shows the honeyed, fruity side of Irish malt.
  4. Try pot still. Finally, Redbreast 12 (RM376–RM492) shows the creamy, spicy pot still style at its best.

This path also helps you learn what you like. For example, if the pot still style wins you over, you may also enjoy sherried Scotch malts. And if you prefer the light blends, a Japanese highball whisky could suit you too. Our whisky for beginners list has more ideas.

Irish whiskey with Malaysian food

Light Irish blends pair well with local food because they do not overpower spice. For instance, a Jameson highball cuts through the richness of satay and peanut sauce. A creamy pot still whiskey, on the other hand, works with roast duck or char siu, since its spice matches the sweet glaze. Also try a small glass of Bushmills with kuih or a light fruit dessert. For more matches, see our whisky food pairing guide.

Storing whiskey in Malaysia's climate

Heat and sunlight can harm any whisky once you open it. So keep your bottles upright, in a dark cupboard, in the coolest room of the house. Upright storage keeps the spirit away from the cork, which can dry out or break down. Also, once a bottle is less than half full, try to finish it within several months, because the air inside slowly flattens the aroma. These tips matter more here than in Dublin, since Malaysian rooms often sit near 30°C.

How to drink Irish whiskey

Irish whiskey is easy to sip neat or with a little water. It also works well with ice or ginger ale. For a classic, try an Irish Coffee: hot coffee, Irish whiskey and a little sugar, with chilled fresh cream floated on top, as the IBA recipe sets out. You can find more ideas on our whisky cocktails page. As always, enjoy it in moderation.

Frequently asked questions

Is Irish whiskey always triple distilled?

No. Triple distillation is a common Irish tradition, and brands such as Jameson and Bushmills use it. However, the rules do not require it, and some Irish distilleries distil twice.

What is single pot still Irish whiskey?

It is a uniquely Irish style made at one distillery in pot stills from a mash of at least 30% malted barley and at least 30% unmalted barley, with up to 5% other cereals. The raw barley gives a creamy, spicy texture. Redbreast 12 is a well-known example.

What is the difference between Irish whiskey and Scotch?

Irish whiskey comes from the island of Ireland and often uses triple distillation and unmalted barley. Scotch comes from Scotland and is usually distilled twice. Irish whiskey rarely uses peat, so it is often lighter and smoother.

How long must Irish whiskey age?

Irish whiskey must age for at least three years in wooden casks, in Ireland, Northern Ireland or both. This comes from the Irish Whiskey Act 1980.

What is the cheapest Irish whiskey in Malaysia?

Tullamore D.E.W. Original is among the cheapest at RM185–RM235. Jameson Original sells for RM213–RM310, and Bushmills Original for RM245–RM276.

Is Bushmills Irish or Scottish?

Bushmills is Irish whiskey. Its distillery stands in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, which counts as part of Ireland for Irish whiskey rules.
