This page is about Whisky Malaysia: who we are, how we research and what we will and will not do. Whisky Malaysia is an independent, ad-free guide to whisky types, brands, prices and duty-free rules in Malaysia. The Whisky Malaysia Editorial Team writes every page. We do not sell alcohol, and no brand pays us for coverage.
Who we are
Our team is a small group of whisky drinkers based in Malaysia. We started this site because local whisky information was hard to find and often out of date. For example, many price pages showed old figures with no date or source. So we set out to build a guide that shows where each fact comes from and when we checked it.
We publish as the Whisky Malaysia Editorial Team rather than under personal names. That way, the whole team shares responsibility for each page, and every page goes through the same checks.
About Whisky Malaysia's independence
This part of our about Whisky Malaysia page sets out the rules that keep us independent. They are simple:
- We run no ads and use no affiliate links.
- We take no payment from brands, distributors or shops.
- We do not accept free bottles in exchange for reviews or rankings.
- We do not sell alcohol, take orders or deliver.
As a result, no one can buy a better spot in our lists. When we name a shop, it is because we checked its prices, not because it paid us.
How we research prices
Every retail price on this site comes from one data file. We built it by checking the listed prices at these Malaysian retailers:
- whisky.my
- W Wine & Liquor Warehouse
- Jaya Grocer
- Whiskery
- Kanpai
- Nomu
- Blue Ocean
- Goodstuff
- eLuenHeng
- Mr Chow
We then show a typical range for each bottle, such as RM248–RM269 for Johnnie Walker Black Label 12. Where a discounter sells lower, we show that as a separate "lowest seen" figure. However, discounters may sell parallel imports or other bottle sizes, so we keep them apart. If only a discounter stocks a bottle, we say it has limited availability. See the results in our whisky price list.

How we check laws, tax and duty free
For legal, tax and duty-free facts, we go to government sources first. These include the Royal Malaysian Customs Department traveller's guide and the duty orders published in the Federal Gazette. For example, our excise and import duty figures come straight from the 2025 Customs orders. When a fact comes only from a news report, we name the report and its date. If sources disagree, we show both. Read the results in our whisky tax guide and our duty free whisky guide.
How we write about brands
For brand history, we use the official distillery or brand website first. Then we link to that source on the page. If we cannot verify a founding year, an owner or an award, we leave it out. Our tasting notes describe each whisky's general style, often based on the brand's own notes, in our own words. We also avoid hype, because a guide should help you choose, not push you to buy.
Update policy
Prices and rules change, so we re-check them regularly. Each page shows the date it was last updated near the top and again at the bottom. If you have a question about Whisky Malaysia's update policy, just ask us. In addition, price tables carry a "Verified" date. When a law or duty rate changes, we update the pages it affects. Still, a shop may change a price at any time, so always confirm with the retailer before you buy.
Editorial standards
- Accuracy. We cite sources inline and never invent facts.
- Clarity. We write in plain Malaysian English with short sentences.
- Corrections. If you spot an error, tell us through our contact page. We fix confirmed errors and update the page date.
- Spelling. We write "whisky" for Scotch, Japanese and most other styles, and "whiskey" for Irish and American whiskey.
Responsible drinking
Everything about Whisky Malaysia is written for adults aged 21 and over, the legal minimum age to buy alcohol in Malaysia. We share information; we do not encourage anyone to drink. We also respect that many Malaysians do not drink for religious or personal reasons, and we never target Muslims. If you do drink, please drink in moderation and never drive afterwards. Our alcohol disclaimer explains our full stance.
