Bourbon whiskey is an American whiskey made from at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers. These rules come from US federal law, and they give bourbon its sweet vanilla and caramel taste. In Malaysia, Jim Beam White Label sells for RM179–RM219, Maker's Mark for RM244–RM319 and Woodford Reserve for RM295–RM349. This guide covers the legal rules, straight bourbon, Tennessee whiskey and the Lincoln County Process, and current shelf prices.
What is bourbon whiskey?
Bourbon is a type of American whiskey with strict legal rules. The US federal standards of identity in 27 CFR 5.143 set out what a bourbon must be. In short, the law requires:
- a mash of at least 51% corn;
- distillation to no more than 160 proof, which is 80% ABV;
- storage in new charred oak containers;
- entry into those containers at no more than 125 proof, or 62.5% ABV;
- bottling at no less than 40% ABV, the same floor as other US whisky.
The rest of the mash is usually rye or wheat, plus some malted barley. Distillers call this recipe the "mash bill". A rye-heavy mash bill gives more spice, while a wheated one, such as Maker's Mark, tastes softer and rounder.
Why new charred oak matters
New charred oak is the heart of bourbon flavour. Distillers burn the inside of each new barrel, which caramelises sugars in the wood. As the spirit soaks in and out of the wood, it picks up vanilla, toffee, caramel and spice. It also gains its deep amber colour.
Scotch, by contrast, usually ages in used casks. Many of those used casks are, in fact, ex-bourbon barrels, because a bourbon barrel can serve only once for bourbon. So the bourbon and Scotch industries are closely linked. For a full comparison of styles, see our types of whisky hub.
Straight bourbon and age
Plain bourbon has no legal minimum age under the federal table. However, "straight" bourbon must age for at least two years in new charred oak. Many bottles go far beyond that. For example, Eagle Rare carries a 10-year age statement and sells for RM368 at one specialist shop.
Bourbon ages faster than Scotch. Kentucky summers are hot and winters are cold, so the spirit moves in and out of the wood more each year. As a result, a six-year-old bourbon can taste as oaky as a much older Scotch.
Tennessee whiskey and the Lincoln County Process
Tennessee whiskey is a close cousin of bourbon. A Tennessee state law, signed in 2013, sets its rules. It must be made in Tennessee from at least 51% corn and aged in oak in the state. It must also pass through maple charcoal before ageing.
That charcoal step has a name: the Lincoln County Process. Distillers drip the new spirit slowly through a deep bed of sugar maple charcoal. The charcoal strips out some harsh notes, so the whiskey tastes smoother and slightly sweet. Jack Daniel's is the best-known Tennessee whiskey. Its Old No.7 sells for RM195–RM229 in Malaysia.
So is Jack Daniel's a bourbon whiskey? It meets most bourbon rules, but the brand prefers the Tennessee name. Many drinkers treat it as a bourbon-style whiskey, and that is fair enough for shopping purposes.

Bourbon vs Scotch: the key differences
| Feature | Bourbon | Scotch |
|---|---|---|
| Where | United States | Scotland |
| Main grain | At least 51% corn | Malted barley, plus wheat or maize in grain whisky |
| Cask | New charred oak | Usually used oak casks, 700 litres or less |
| Minimum age | None, or 2 years for straight bourbon | 3 years |
| Typical taste | Sweet, vanilla, caramel | Fruity, malty, sometimes smoky |
Both are whisky. The spelling differs only because Americans mostly write "whiskey". Read our single malt whisky guide to compare the Scotch side.

How to drink bourbon
Bourbon is sweet, so it works well neat or on one large ice cube. It is also the base of classic cocktails such as the Old Fashioned, the Whiskey Sour and the Mint Julep. In Malaysia's heat, a bourbon highball with ginger ale or soda is a refreshing choice. Find recipes on our whisky cocktails page, and if you enjoy spice, try a rye whiskey next. Please drink responsibly.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a whiskey a bourbon?
Under US federal rules, bourbon must use a mash of at least 51% corn, be distilled at 160 proof (80% ABV) or less, and go into new charred oak containers at 125 proof (62.5% ABV) or less. Like all US whisky, it must be bottled at 40% ABV or more.
Does bourbon have to be made in Kentucky?
No. Bourbon must come from the United States, but any state can make it. Kentucky simply makes most of it, and many famous brands, such as Jim Beam, Maker's Mark and Woodford Reserve, come from there.
Is Jack Daniel's a bourbon?
Jack Daniel's calls itself Tennessee whiskey, not bourbon. It follows bourbon-style rules for grain and new charred oak, but it also goes through maple charcoal filtering, as Tennessee law requires. See our Jack Daniel's price guide.
Is bourbon sweeter than Scotch?
Usually, yes. Corn gives a sweeter spirit, and new charred oak adds strong vanilla and caramel. Most Scotch ages in used casks, so the oak is gentler and the grain flavour shows more.
Which bourbons are easy to find in Malaysia?
Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, Woodford Reserve and Wild Turkey appear at several mainstream retailers. Jack Daniel's, a Tennessee whiskey, is also widely sold. Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare appear mainly at a single specialist shop.
Is honey bourbon still bourbon?
No. Products such as Jim Beam Honey and Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey add honey liqueur and are bottled below 40% ABV. So they are whiskey liqueurs, not straight bourbon or Tennessee whiskey.
