Tioman duty free whisky follows the same basic rule as Langkawi: stay at least 48 hours, then take up to 1 litre of alcohol in total back to the mainland. Tioman has held duty-free status since the government confirmed it in 2002. However, it has far fewer shops than Langkawi, and we found no published whisky prices. So use KLIA's prices as your benchmark, and buy only from an established shop.
Is Tioman still duty free?
Yes. On 17 Jan 2002, then Prime Minister Mahathir confirmed that Pulau Tioman would become a duty-free island, as NST reported. Today, Tioman sits alongside Labuan and Langkawi in item 11 of the Customs Duties (Exemption) Order 2017. That item sets the rules for taking duty-free goods from these islands to the rest of Malaysia.
So Tioman duty free whisky carries no excise or import duty. For context, those two duties add RM86.80 to a 70cl bottle at 40% on the mainland. Our whisky tax guide shows the sums.
Tioman duty free whisky rules
The rules match Langkawi's, and they are short:
- Minimum stay: at least 48 hours on Tioman.
- Alcohol to the mainland: wine, spirits, beer or malt liquor up to 1 litre in total per person.
- Tobacco: taxed since 1 Jan 2021, so no longer duty free.
In October 2026, Malay Mail confirmed that alcohol from the duty-free islands stays limited to "a combined total of one litre per person". So one 1 litre bottle of whisky uses your whole allowance. If you carry more, you pay duty on the excess.
Tioman and the RM10,000 Budget 2027 plan
Budget 2027, tabled on 9 Oct 2026, will raise the duty-free shopping limit to RM10,000. However, the announcement names only Langkawi and Labuan. Tioman is not part of it, so its current rules stay in place. Also, even on Langkawi and Labuan, the start date has not yet been announced, and alcohol remains capped at 1 litre.

Where to buy Tioman duty free whisky
Few sources cover Tioman's shops, and none of them is official. Here is what we found, with the age of each source:
- Vision Duty Free, past the hospital and school around Tekek, named by the undated travel site WhatsInPort.
- An airport duty-free shop, also named by WhatsInPort.
- Star Glory, which a Shopee guide from Oct 2022 listed with outlets on Tioman and Pangkor.
Because these sources are old or undated, ask your resort or ferry operator which shops are open now.
Tioman duty free whisky prices
We found no price list from any Tioman shop, so we do not quote one. Some websites give rough duty-free island prices, but they do not name a shop or date. For that reason, we leave them out.
Instead, compare with prices you can trust. On 16 Oct 2026, Eraman at KLIA listed these 1 litre bottles:
- Ballantine's Finest: RM114
- Jack Daniel's: RM159
- Johnnie Walker Black Label: RM228
- The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve: RM282
Meanwhile, a 70cl Johnnie Walker Black Label typically costs RM248–RM269 in city shops. So if a Tioman price sits well above KLIA's, it may not be a good deal. Our KLIA duty free whisky price list has the full table.
On the other hand, a price far below KLIA's is a warning sign. Fake and refilled bottles do turn up in Malaysia. Read our where to buy whisky guide to learn how to check seals, labels and stamps.
Who can buy whisky on Tioman?
21 is the legal minimum age to buy alcohol, under the Food (Amendment) Regulations 2016. Enforcement was reported from December 2017, with the Health Ministry announcing the 21 rule on 16 Oct 2018. So shops may ask for ID, and you should carry it.
Taking Tioman duty free whisky home
- Stay 48 hours. Plan your travel times so you spend 48 hours or more on the island.
- Buy 1 litre or less. One 1 litre bottle is the easiest way to stay within the limit.
- Pack it well. Wrap the bottle in clothes for the boat or plane trip.
- Keep the receipt. It shows where and when you bought it.
- Declare any excess. Customs charges duty on alcohol above 1 litre.
Tioman, Langkawi, Labuan or KLIA?
Tioman makes sense if you already plan a stay of two nights or more. However, Tioman duty free whisky is a holiday bonus, not a reason to make the trip. Langkawi has more shops, and Labuan needs only a 24-hour stay. Meanwhile, KLIA publishes its prices online, so you can plan ahead.
All four share the same 1 litre limit. So choose by your trip, not by the allowance. For a side-by-side view of the rules and prices, read our duty free whisky Malaysia guide.
Finally, enjoy the island safely. If you drink, stay out of the sea and off boats until you are sober.
