The Amrut story

J.N. Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale founded Amrut Distilleries in Bangalore (now Bengaluru) in 1948. For decades, the company made other spirits for the Indian market. Then it turned to single malt. On 24 August 2004, Amrut launched its single malt in Scotland, starting in Glasgow.

That was a bold move, since few people then took Indian malt seriously. However, the whisky won fans quickly. For example, writer Jim Murray ranked Amrut Fusion the third-best whisky in the world in his 2010 Whisky Bible. Today Amrut calls itself India's first single malt whisky. You can learn more on the official Amrut Distilleries website.

How the Indian climate shapes Amrut

Bengaluru is warm all year. So the spirit and the oak interact much faster than in Scotland. Amrut reports losing about 11–12% of its whisky to evaporation each year, compared with about 2% in Scotland. As a result, Amrut gains rich flavour in only a few years, and most bottles carry no age statement.

The heat also gives a fuller, fruitier style. Many people find tropical fruit, vanilla and spice in the glass. To compare Amrut with Taiwanese malts, read our Taiwanese and Indian whisky guide.

Amrut range in Malaysia with tasting notes

Four Amrut bottles appear on Malaysian shelves. The notes below paraphrase common descriptions of each one.

Amrut Indian Single Malt

This is the core bottle, at 46% ABV. It is unpeated and easy to like. The Amrut price in Malaysia for this bottle is RM388–RM399, so it is the cheapest way into the range at mainstream shops.

Nose

Malt, honey and tropical fruit.

Palate

Sweet barley, vanilla and a touch of spice.

Finish

Medium length and warm.

Amrut Fusion

Fusion blends malt from Indian barley with malt from peated barley grown in Scotland. It comes at 50% ABV. Because of the peat, it has a gentle smoky edge. Its Amrut price in Malaysia is RM448–RM455.

Nose

Light smoke, orange peel and cocoa.

Palate

Rich and oily, with fruit, spice and soft peat.

Finish

Long, with dark chocolate and smoke.

Amrut Intermediate Sherry

Intermediate Sherry spends a stage of its ageing in sherry casks, between spells in other oak. That adds dried fruit and nuttiness. The Amrut price in Malaysia for this bottle is RM435–RM453. Note that whisky.my sells it as a travel-retail edition.

Nose

Raisins, nuts and toffee.

Palate

Dried fruit, spice and sweet oak.

Finish

Long and warming.

Amrut Peated (limited availability)

Amrut also makes a peated single malt. However, we found it at only one online discounter, at RM290. None of the mainstream shops we checked listed it, so treat it as limited availability.

Amrut price Malaysia table (October 2026)

The table below covers every Amrut we found in Malaysian shops. We checked whisky.my and W Wine & Liquor Warehouse. Some Amrut bottles there come in 75cl rather than 70cl. Also, online discounters may sell parallel-import or other-size bottles. So their lowest price is not always a like-for-like match.

Where to buy Amrut in Malaysia

Whisky.my and W Wine & Liquor Warehouse both list Fusion, the Indian Single Malt and Intermediate Sherry. W Wine & Liquor Warehouse has shops in Puchong and Kota Damansara, while whisky.my sells online. For more trusted shops and delivery tips, read where to buy whisky in Malaysia.

How to drink Amrut

Amrut is fairly strong, so try it neat first and then add a few drops of water. Water opens up the fruit and spice, especially in Fusion. A tulip-shaped glass helps you catch the aroma, so see our whisky glasses guide.

With food, Amrut suits spiced dishes. For example, try it with tandoori chicken, lamb curry or dark chocolate. Our whisky food pairing guide has more ideas. As always, sip slowly and drink in moderation.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Amrut Fusion in Malaysia?

Amrut Fusion costs about RM448–RM455 at whisky.my and W Wine & Liquor Warehouse in October 2026. One online discounter listed it lower, but that stock may be parallel-import or a different size.

What is the cheapest Amrut in Malaysia?

At mainstream shops, Amrut Indian Single Malt is the cheapest at about RM388–RM399. Amrut Peated appeared lower, at RM290, but only at one online discounter.

Is Indian single malt real single malt?

Yes. Amrut makes its single malt from malted barley at one distillery, the same basic rule used in Scotland. The difference is the hot climate, which speeds up ageing.

What makes Amrut Fusion special?

Fusion blends malt made from Indian barley with malt made from peated barley from Scotland. It comes at 50% ABV, so it is richer and stronger than many entry malts.

Why does Amrut age so fast?

Bengaluru is warm all year. Amrut reports losing around 11–12% of its spirit to evaporation each year, compared with about 2% in Scotland, so the whisky matures in far fewer years.

How old must I be to buy Amrut in Malaysia?

You must be 21 or older to buy alcohol in Malaysia, under the Food (Amendment) Regulations 2016.
