Bowmore dates from 1779, and the brand calls itself the first licensed distillery on Islay. It sits in the village of Bowmore, on the shore of Loch Indaal. The founder was David Simson, a local businessman who also built a new water supply from the River Laggan.

How Bowmore makes its whisky
Bowmore still runs its own floor maltings. Workers turn the barley by hand every four hours while it sprouts. Next, the kiln dries the barley over peat smoke, which gives the whisky its smoky side.
